Light Your Light
When you look at a candle, you might see a body of wax with a wick in it to light up a not-so-big area. That is not incorrect at all; in fact, it's exactly what it is. Some things, however, are not only what they are but also what they remind you of.
When I look at a candle, I see red, fire, a calm temper; I feel romanced, relaxed; I hear a family laughing through a power cut. I feel safe. It's so wondrous to me that one object as simple as a candle can mean so much. It's what you think, how you feel, and how you choose to see it that makes you aware of the small things, mindful of the beauty in everything.
The earliest memory I have of candles is probably my first birthday that I don't remember due to my extremely young age but I'll try and walk you through it from what I've seen in our home videos. I was just a baby with a bald head and huge blue-grey eyes and my parents were holding me with the most sincere smiles I'd ever seen in my whole life (not because I've only been alive for a year). There were lots of adults who were talking to each other and laughing. Everyone looked like they were having fun. There was a slight panic of me breaking stuff but then everyone was at ease when my mom picked me up. A cake that said "Happy Birthday Nazlı Sosis" was on the table. Although the writing on the cake didn’t mean much then, since I couldn’t read, it’s the cutest thing when I think of it today. I tried to blow but my baby lungs must have not had the capacity. Although I’ve only seen it in a video it still reminds me of the love I have in my life.
Speaking of love, candles also remind me of the fun you can have whenever and wherever with the ones you love. In a power cut, you can either bum yourselves out because you can't finish Lucifer and you were so hyped about deckerstar but now all you're left with is an almost kiss (which is what happens anyway) OR you can sit around a table with candles in your hands laughing at each others' distorted faces from the candlelight —a friend looks like voldemort and another looks like a character out of a horror movie— being amazed by the shape shifting shadows, and tell each other spooky stories (the scariest wins). The decision is yours to make. How you choose to see an object, a situation around an object, is what makes your day in the end.
Romance, family, relaxation... All so wonderful things, and all can coincide in an object only if you let them, only if you see them with your heart and mind, and not just with your eyes.
